Ericsson and Unitel Successfully Complete a 5G Data Call in Angola

Unitel S.A. (Angola) and Ericsson have announced the successful completion of a 5G data call-in Angola, utilizing an allocated mid-band spectrum of 3.5GHz.

The 5G infrastructure was powered by Ericsson’s  5G Radio Access Network (RAN) and Ericsson 5G Core solutions for non-standalone networks (NSA). These solutions enable fast time-to-market for 5G by leveraging the existing network infrastructure and is focused on enhanced mobile broadband to provide higher data bandwidth and reliable connectivity.

This implementation will showcase the massive potential 5G holds towards bridging the digital divide in Angola. By delivering broadband coverage to the last mile through use cases like Fixed Wireless Access (FWA), 5G is set to significantly contribute to a more inclusive digital economy in the country.

“We are committed to exploring the full potential of 5G technology to bring better and enhanced network experiences to our consumers. Today’s achievement is a milestone towards that ambition, and we look forward to our continued collaboration with our strategic partners in soon making the 5G commercial offer a reality in the country.”

Dr. Eng. Amilcar Safeca, Chief Technology Officer and Administrator, Unitel S.A. (Angola)

“The success of the 5G call trial has demonstrated the capability of Unitel’s network infrastructure for the eventual introduction of 5G services. Having supported Unitel with advanced and reliable cellular technology for nearly two decades, we are committed to working together to further develop and enhance their network infrastructure and pave the way for the commercial launch of 5G.”

Hossam Kandeel, Country Manager, Ericsson Angola at Ericsson Middle East and Africa

The successful demonstration is part of the three-year frame agreement Unitel signed with Ericsson early this year to prepare their infrastructure for future 5G services in Angola. The trial serves as a significant milestone towards the introduction of 5G in the country and highlights the possibilities for Industry 4.0 applications in the country.
